Sometimes beautiful friendships start with a simple and kind gesture. My husband, 2 years ago helped a stranger (looking for a job) get a job. Well, all he did was tell her about a job opening at some place and when she applied for it, she got the job. She and her husband wanted to treat my husband and me (with kids) to an ice-cream. We met and liked them instantly. They invited us to their house very recently over dinner when their parents were visiting so that we could meet them. It was not only a fun-filled and awesome evening but was also an extremely delicious one too. [Read on…]
A year and half ago, my wonderful neighbors were going to a Diwali potluck at a friend’s place. Before they left, they came to wish us and during the exchange of greetings, sweets and food, I found myself holding a box. To my sheer delight, my hyderabadi friend had given us a dabba full of Hyderabadi Veg Biryani that she had prepared for the potluck. If you felt a pang of envy on reading this, you are justified. After all, it’s not everyday that you get to eat the Mughal delicacy. [Read on…]
I have been sad. Actually very sad and disappointed. Past few days have been a blur. As a silent and helpless bystander in the 2016 election campaign, I was so sure of its outcome. I mean, what was there to be unsure of? Never before has any presidential race been so one sided and never before had America been so sure of the outcome coz who in their right mind could vote for a sexist, racist, misogynist, homophobic, narcissist……..right? I am struggling these days to get back into the routine of blogging. There is so much going on and it just seems easier to not post sometimes and crash on a bed at the end of the day. That’s what I have been doing since the move. Finally, am finding my rhythm again. Just yesterday, I used my oven for the first time. I had never used a gas oven up until now and even though it will take some time getting used to it, it felt great. Even if it was for a pizza. Hey! Even though I believe one should live in the present and plan for the future, and that past should be looked back as a ‘lesson learnt’ experience, I still sometimes find myself falling into the ‘what-if’ trap. This republic day made me ponder what if I was born before independence? (I know it was not independence day but thoughts are like wild horses. Who can control them?) Would I have been a brave patriot or a coward sucking up to the British? It is easy to say “Oh, most definitely the former!” but then who knows the answers to what-ifs. [Read on…]
It’s almost Diwali!!! I am so swamped with cleaning every nook and corner of the house (with whatever little time that I can squeeze in, between cooking our meals and taking care of two kids) that I am not getting any time to cook the things that I want to. And I haven’t started any preparations for Diwali sweets!!! 🙁 Even worse, I don’t know what will I be making for that day!! My mom makes this super awesome besan barfi every Diwali which doesn’t taste like any besan barfi I’ve ever eaten!! I already made it last year so want to make something else this year but my brain is completely fried with all the cleaning and vacuuming. Probably the ‘man of the house’ will come to my rescue.
